Born in China, he entered Oxford in 1915, returning to complete his studies after serving in the First World War. He was made a fellow of Wadham College in 1922 and was elected warden in 1938, a post he retained for the rest of his life. He served as Professor of Poetry (1946-51) and as Vice Chancellor (1951-4). Bowra wrote and edited scholarly books in many areas of literature, but he is particularly known for his studies of ancient Greek poetry and culture. Condition: Fine.
