Union Tank Car's Interesting History!:Union Tank Car was incorporated in 1891 (right after the Panic of 1890), as a subsidiary of the infamous J.D.Rockefeller Standard Oil Trust. When Standard Oil was broken up in to 34 companies by the Supreme Court in 1911, Union Tank Car became a public company, and began to serve other oil companies. During the great depression, it acquired thousands of tank cars, and then started to lease them back to shippers, which has continued to date. One extremely interesting fact is that TransUnion (yes, one of the three large credit companies we deal with today) was formed as a holding company in 1968 to hold Union Tank Car Company, and soon began acquiring credit information and information management companies as a second major investment. Marmon Group acquired TransUnion in 1981, and spun off TransUnion to Madison Dearborn Partners in the 1990's, so they are no longer part of the same company, but what an unsuspected twist for a tank car company.
