Description: Hesba Stretton - Hester Morley's Promise - 1873 First edition published by Henry S. King & Co. First edition. In 3 volumes, 271, 271 and 259 pages respectively. The books are quite firmly bound in contemporary brown cloth, simply lettered and decorated in gilt to the spines, with speckling to all edges of the text blocks and canary yellow endpapers, the cloth is slightly marked and rubbed, the spines are cocked, the extremities are bumped, and there are some small tears to the cloth. The text blocks are slightly toned and foxed, with grubby marks to some pages and a few dog-eared corners. More famous for her edifying single-volume tracts and contributions to Charles Dickens's Extra Christmas numbers of All the Year Round, this was one of a small number of full-length novels published by Stretton in triple-decker format, a Victorian melodrama about the trials of a second-hand bookseller and his daughter, in England and the Burgundy region of France. It is rare in commerce.
