Description: The Gospel Singer [Signed bookplate laid in] Author: Harry Crews Title: The Gospel Singer [Signed bookplate laid in] Publication: New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc, 1968 Description: Very Good / Very Good. New York: William Morrow & Company, Inc, 1968. First Edition. Signed bookplate laid in. Octavo (21.5 cm), [249]pp. Blue illustrated dust jacket with author bio and photo on the back cover and price intact ($4.95). Boards full bound in light green cloth with white and black stamping on the spine only. Dark blue endsheets. Dust jacket back and fold-overs lightly discolored, mostly at the margins. Minor scrapes and rubbed edges overall but no loss. Head and tail of spine are reinforced with paper tape on the inside of the dust jacket, as are the top of the fold-over joints. Some minor discoloration on the inside of the dust jacket at the bottom margin. One large crease on the front cover's upper corner. Boards slightly soiled with some fading at the margins and a damp stain at the bottom of the front cover. Bumping to all corners and head and tail of spine. Head of spine has some color rubbed away. Top margin of the front cover has a bump to it. Spine material pulling away from the back of the book block but not too significantly. Minor scrapes to page edges. Binding sound but a little shaky due to this pulling from the book block. Dark blue endsheets have some discoloration and some erasure marks from previous writing that was rubbed away. Inside pages remain clean. The debut novel of a Grit Lit master. Marrying the tone of the Rough South genre with his own experiences surviving near-death, Crews did not shy away from anything in his writing, mixing crude scenes and extreme violence to reveal reality and shock the reader. The Gospel Singer is a satire of evangelism; a farm boy returns to his hometown as a faux faith-healer and convinces the entire town to follow him blindly.
