Description: This is a rare early painting called "Going to the Trading Post" by Harrison Begay dating from around 1960. This is Begay at the peak of his long career. The fineness and delicacy of his ultra-fine brushwork is astounding, as shown in the details of the saddle blanket and the horse's mane, tail, and coat. Begay's two signatures are also small, fine and delicate - barely noticeable and nothing like the larger block lettering he went to in later years as he became well known and sought after. It seems as if Begay did not want his signature to impose on the image of the determined horse and rider passing by. The watchful sun spirit and the protective twin Yei rainbow figures follow the rider's path from above, Begay was probably in his late 40s when he created this painting. This is a portrayal of pure, rarified Navajo culture. We can almost hear the clear voice of Ed Lee Natay - a Begay contemporary - gently singing a Navajo trotting song as we follow the rider's passage among the chamisa plants and the Swift birds darting above. This is an original casein painting - it is not a silkscreen or a reproduction of any kind. On the back, in Begay's handwriting is this inscription: "Going to the Trading Post by Harrison Begay, Navajo artist. Original cassein 29.50" NOTE: the thin dark streak seen above the signatures in the lower right corner is a shadow from an outside scratch on the frame glass - the streak is NOT on the painting. **The glass and the frame are not included**. The painting measures approximately 10 x 14 inches - what you see in the mat opening as shown in the main photo. The painting comes in the FREE double matting to help protect the painting during shipping, as shown in the main photo - the mat is easily removable and replaceable by the buyer for a different color or style mat, if desired. Excellent condition. Flat rate shipping - insured, signature required at delivery.
