Description: Hard to find copy of The Praise of Folly. This edition from 1887 is in very good condition, especially given it's age. The spine has some fading from the sun and some wear at the top and bottom. The Praise of Folly was one of Desiderius Erasmus' most famous works when it was first published in 1511 A.D.. The book was read far and wide across Europe and published, first in Latin, then into most of the languages of Europe. It was written in a time where countries were beginning to publish books into their own languages, rather than resort to the popular Latin. The rise of the Reformation, of which Erasmus was an important figure, led to a growing dislike of all things Catholic, particularly outside of Italy and Spain, hence the Latin mass was quickly replaced by Reformed sermons in the local languages. Hence, The Praise of Folly, helps to represent that shift in common culture even before Martin Luther's 95 Theses.
