The California one is great, but the colors these mini abalones come in really makes up for their small size. This particular variety is interesting because you can watch on YouTube a Chinese girl chatting away the entire time in Chinese collecting ones like these---one gorgeous green mini-abalone after another. But she finds them not for their shells, but to eat! Yep, she finds them and then throws them in her bucket, and every time she does, my wife an I cringe and cry out, "No, no!" . Who would think watching YouTube could be so heartbreaking.... Anyhow, this particular beautiful species is, according to the world-renown expert on abalones, Buzz Owen, haliotis discus, typically found on the NW coast of America, who says that the shell often comes from hatcheries, not quite as romantic as a Chinese girl jabbering in Chinese as she wanders around finding them at low tide, but still, it's gorgeous! And this shell, even with the tiny damage to the mother of pearl where the muscle was attached to the inside of the shell, is an almost translucent beauty with a gorgeous, vivid GREEN color that would terrific sitting on your shelf!The perfect shell for a first-class collection.
