Description: From the footage of the late Roger Holmes, this program covers the journey of the world’s once largest operating steam engine between 1981 & 2010 before it was retired for the second time as it was replaced by Big Boy 4014. Here the challenger is on 2 trips from Cheyenne Wyoming to the Lone Star State. One trip being the Superbowl 38 special between the New England Patriots & the Carolina Panthers in January while the chase is from the greater Kansas City area to Jefferson City Missouri, & the other from coverage between Coffeyville Kansas & North Little Rock Arkansas via Van Buren in Late May with lots of good pacing sequences on both of these trips. Along the way, there are some diesels including an Amtrak Genesis unit, a UP freight with a Dash 8-40CW number 9758, & an SD70Mac number 4254 with the present era wings logo on the front of the unit (Listen for the Scanner Communications), 2 unidentified coal or grain trains, & a mixed freight with SD70Mac 4152 waiting on a siding to let 3985 take the right of way. Thankfully, there are no diesel helpers behind the Challenger on both of these ferry runs and/or excursions. The only locations identified while traveling to & from various destinations away from Cheyenne & Houston are Ozark Arkansas, & some milepost markers. Like many of the other Roger Holmes titles, it’s un-narrated while the trains do all of the talking. 20 years after the footages were captured, 3985 has since been donated to the former rock island railroad shops in Silvis Illinois in November of 2022 where the challenger & 2-10-2 number 5511 are under restoration back to operational condition. All of these scenes were later used in the 2022 compilation title: A Northern, A challenger, & A big boy, which is the Holmes productions version of Union Pacific steam new century journeys by yard goat images in 2016.
