I myself was seriously wondering just how-good this one would sound " freshly remastered " in all of its sonic glory - and was also extremely-curious too what show segments specifically would be selected/chosen from this Stellar ! 7/27/74 Cap Centre Show - being as this release was distributed on a single ( 1 ) Bonus Disc CD. Personally, I've listened to all available boards & audience recordings of every Cap Centre performance ever by the Band. And Why ? Naturally ... because it was an old childhood stompin' ground for me - and I've seen them work their Live-Magic ! there more times than I could even count. I always felt the '74, '76, '79, '81 & '90 runs were top-class - as it's hard to pick favorites - however, keep in mind that the Band only played Landover a scarce 4-times prior to the 1980's. Then of course, there was a mighty era where the Merriweather Post Pavilion instead won the G.D. Mid-Atlantic " MD " honors. So obviously, there was an urge to dig into the old stuff from the creaky-old ( though beloved ) hockey rink. Maybe '76 or '79, or even '81 ( '82 even ) and '90 have always gotten a lot of ear-time ... but, it might be technically correct to consider this 7/29/74 show the very best Show of all. To put it swiftly ... it's '74 Dead and things happen - fast ! ... and then other things happen right-after, and then next thing you know ... you're all of a sudden pushed way-out to outer space, or, you know - at least the outer-stratosphere ! So, my big question before getting this release was : what ' exactly ' will get picked ? and what will so sadly get left-aside ? Well, things worked out well - very-well ... as this is without any question the " smoldering-hot chunk " that you most definitely want from 7/29. In a matter of fact - you can pretty much plan now on making this one one of your " top-shelf " G.D. audio best friends ! The golden goods occur as follows : Sugaree - Weather Report > Let It Grow - He's Gone > Truckin' > Nobody's Fault > Other One > Spanish Jam > Wharf Rat. I won't detail here too-much in the spirit of not ruining the surprise - ( if you're not already familiar ) - but ... Jerry is the initial catalyst with some spot-on treble high flurries during the back-end of Let it Grow - and Phil's response is just like a train running down the track ! Possibly a " Top 10 " Let it Grow here ? Only 1-single & tiny timing-error in the Band's playing in the final 1:00 - and flawlessly-creative & Awesome ! otherwise. The He's Gone exchange ( where it counts ) is simply-magnificent ! Then it's time for the " bliss-sandwich " - no holds-barred G.D., with pushes & challenges all throughout the stage - as each Band member is all-in ! This one indeed was well-worth the wait - and will be a very tough one to follow-up .... the " Dave's Picks Bonus Disc 2012 " - '74 G.D. ! - at the Cap Centre !! - in the MD !!! Enjoy !!!!!
