Description: Gladiolus cardinalis Almost extinct in nature, this South African native bulb is one of the most spectacular of all Glads. The bold, cardinal red flowers have white patches on the lower 3 tepals, and appear in early to late spring, with 4 to 11 flowers per gracefully arching stem. The bulbs go semi-dormant in the fall, here in coastal Northern California, but will go completely dormant in colder areas. Naturally occurring on the Cape Peninsula, Gladiolus cardinalis is usually found on sheer cliffs, close to waterfalls, and is often completely saturated with water. My mother plant is growing at the edge of my pond, and is always quite damp. Hardy zones 8 to 10. To 18" tall and 12" wide. Does not like temperatures above 85 degrees F. This offering is for one blooming-size bulb - shipped bareroot - similar to what may be seen in the last photo. Flower photo for reference only. Plant Immediately upon arrival. I have been growing rare and exotic plants for nearly 50 years, and take great pride in what I grow and ship. All photos are of plants in my own garden and collection (unless stated otherwise).
