Description: For your consideration is an original vintage print of "San Giorgio Maggiore" after Canaletto by Giovanni Battista Brustolon, printed by Edizioni Ponte Vecchio. It's a bit complicated, so let me break it down: The original image is an 18th C painting by Italian/Venetian renaissance painter Giovanni Antonio Canal, better known as " Canaletto ." This listing is NOT for that painting (it's in Windsor Castle). Giovanni Battista Brostoloni was an Italian engraver who worked in Venice in the mid-1700s and in 1763 produced twenty "vedute" of Venice cityscapes based on Canaletto paintings. This auction is NOT for that original etching, which is in a private collection in Italy. Edizioni Ponte Vecchio, a publishing house founded in Florence, Italy in 1930, produced limited edition art reprints of Brostoloni's Venetian engravings. These used an actual plate, likely the original but unverified, as it still showcases the original plate line imprint. NOT A CHEAP PRINTING, and scarce. This listing is one of those prints. The publisher's name (Edizioni Ponte Vecchio) is printed in the bottom center. Most of the Vecchio prints are half the size of this. Again, this was not a piece for the Italian commoners at the time. The print itself was backed on a thicker stock so it cannot be rolled for shipping regardless. There is a custom-made frame available at no extra cost to ship this in (shown in last photo), but the glass has broken and has been removed. If the buyer is interested we could have this re-framed at cost, or new glass cut for this old frame, also at cost. Print size is 16.25" x 22" overall outer dimensions, with the actual image being 11.5" x 18". Condition is acceptable but not perfect. There has been a small repair in the cloud area as shown in the 4th photo. There is also some tanning/aging as shown. However, with the rigid backing there are no folds, warping tears or holes. Not perfect but a gorgeous, high-quality vintage pressing that is as close to the museum-piece original as you can get without a small fortune or an organized crime connection.
