Gideon Welles (1802-1878) was the U.S. Secretary of the Navy from 1861 to 1869. This text is his response to Charles Francis Adams's April 1873 address, "Memorial Address on the life, character and services of William H. Seward." Welles maintained that it was "a document which, if permitted to pass uncorrected, would be likely to contribute to, and strengthen false history." In it, Seward's abilities seemed to outweigh the President's. Welles set the record straight, to his way of thinking, in three papers published by the Galaxy in late 1873. This volume is an expanded and combined version of those efforts.
