Description: This is a custom 12" figure of German WWII military leader, Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (11-15-1891 to 10-14-1944). Rommel was one of the most decorated German officers in WWI. In 1937 he published a classic book on military tactics, "Infantry Attacks" based on his experiences in WWI. When the Nazi Party came into power, Rommel would go along with the new regime though not totally sympathetic to the party. In WWII, Rommel was the leader of the 7th Panzer Division in the invasion of France in 1940. He also led the German and Italian forces in the North Africa Campaign. Rommel established a reputation as one of the most able tank commanders of the war which earned him the nickname "the Desert Fox". Though he originally supported Adolph Hitler, Rommel would later be implicated in the assasination attempt on Hitler's life. Because Rommel was such a decorated hero of Germany, Hitler wanted to keep Rommel's elimination quiet. Hitler did not immediatly execute Rommel as he had many of the other conspirators. Rommel was given the option of suicide, with assurances that Rommel's family would not be harmed or persecuted because of Rommel's actions or a public trial which would result in humiliation, disgrace, and Rommel's execution. Rommel chose suicide by way of a cyanide capsule. He was given a state funeral after his death was announced "due to injuries recieved when his staff car was strafed" while at Normandy. Rommel would remain a hero in the eyes of the German people. Rommel was a very interesting figure in history.
