DETAIL: Traveling internationally as part of my occupation, I continually have friends and customers ask me to bring back to the USA Pepsi and Coca-Cola cans and bottles from elsewhere in the world. Surprisingly, I have had many friends and customers outside of the USA ask me to secure for them collectible cans of Coca-Cola and Pepsi. Here’s one such offering, a new, full, unopened can of Royal Crown Cola (USA 2022), also known as "RC" Cola, and also well known as the originator of "Nehi" fruit flavored soda. If you’re in the USA, this might not at first blush seem a “collectible”. But then in Eastern Europe or Central Asia for instance, a can of Coca-Cola printed in their alphabet might not seem very unusual or collectible. But to an American, that same can is quite collectible. Likewise in Europe or Asia, American cans, especial those of limited production, are likewise quite collectible. So for all of my friends in Europe and Asia, here’s a genuine, full, unopened can of Royal Crown ("RC") Cola (USA-2022). Sometime around 1903 the Hatcher Grocery Store of Columbus, Georgia became involved in a dispute with the Coca-Cola Company over the issue of bulk discounts for Hatcher's purchase of Coca-Cola's syrup, and Hatcher swore never to purchase Coca-Cola's products ever again. In the basement of the store, Hatcher created his first product in 1905, Royal Crown Ginger Ale. Ginger Ale was shortly followed by Royal Crown Strawberry, and Royal Crown Root Beer. The company was renamed in 1925, Nehi Corporation after its colored and flavored drinks. In 1934 the colas were re-released as Royal Crown Cola. In the 1950s, Royal Crown Cola and moon pies were a popular "working man's lunch" in the American South. In 1954, Royal Crown was the first company to sell soft drinks in a can, and later the first company to sell a soft drink in an aluminum can. In 1958, the company introduced the first diet cola, Diet Rite, and in 1980, a caffeine-free cola. In the mid-1990s, RC released Royal Crown Draft Cola, billed as a "premium" cola using pure cane sugar as a sweetener rather than corn syrup. The company also released Cherry RC, a cherry-flavored version of the RC soft drink, to compete with Coca-Cola Cherry and Pepsi Wild Cherry. Dr. Pepper acquired Royal Crown Cola in October 2000, and though subsequently sold to Cott Beverages of Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, distribution of Royal Crown Cola in the USA is still by the Dr. Pepper-Snapple group. We believe that the work created by these long-gone master artisans is worth protecting and preserving rather than destroying this heritage of antique gemstones by recutting the original work out of existence. And for that reason, somehow, Cultural Anthropologists, Sociologists, Archaeologists, etc., and other enthusiasts of these social sciences are irresistibly drawn to them.
