George Lucas was born in 1944 in Modesta, California. His family attended Disneyland during its opening week in July of 1955 and Lucas would remain enthusiastic about the park. He was interested in comics and science fiction, including television programs such as the “Flash Gordon” serials. Long before Lucas began making films, he wanted to be a race car drive. He spent a good deal of time during his high school years racing on some underground racing circuits at fairgrounds and hanging around garages. A few days before his high school graduation, Lucas was racing his souped-up Autobianchi Bianchina when another driver broadsided him, which flipped his car several times. His seatbelt broke, ejecting him from the car, and accidentally saved his life. He required emergency medical treatment and that experience caused him to lose interest in racing. The accident also convinced him to pursue other interests. Lucas attended Modesto Junior College, where he studied anthropology, sociology, and literature. He also began filming with an 8 mm camera, including filming car races. He also became more and more interested in making his own films. Lucas transferred to the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts. Some of his classmates were Walter Murch, Hal Harwood, John Milieus, and Mathew Robbins, and became a clique of film students known as “The Dirty Dozen.” He also became friends with fellow acclaimed student filmmakers Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Lucas graduate with a BFA in film in 1967. He tried to join the United States Air Force, but was turned down because of his numerous speeding tickets. He was later drafted by the United States Army, but was exempted after medical tests showed that he had diabetes. Lucas continued with his film studies and continued to make various short films. Lucas directed the short film “Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB,” which won first prize at the 1967068 National Student Film Festival. He was awarded a student scholarship by Warner Brothers to observe and work on the making of a film of his choosing. He chose “Finian’s Rainbow” (1968), which was being directed by Francis Ford Coppola. In 1969 Lucas moved to San Francisco and co-founded the studio American Zoetrope with Coppola, hoping to create a liberating environment for filmmakers to direct outside the perceived oppressive control of the Hollywood studio system. Coppola filmed a longer version of “Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB,” but the film was not an immediate success (although it later became a cult classic). Lucas then created his own company, LucasFilm, Ltd., and directed the highly successful “American Graffiti” (1973). Lucas then set his sights on adapting “Flash Gordon,” but was unable to obtain the rights. He then set out to write an original space adventure that would eventually become the legendary “Star Wars” and which would lead to the amazingly successful “Star Wars” universe of films, books, games, comic books, toys, and pinball machines. “Star Wars” became the highest grossing film of all time to that point, displaced five years later by Spielberg’s “E.T.: the ExtraTerrestrial.” Lucas also acted as a story writers and executive producer on the first four “Indiana Jones” films, which Spielberg directed, and which, of course, became one of the most successful film franchises of all time. Lucas also founded Industrial Light & Magic, the hugely successful and important special effects company. The novelization of the original “Star Wars” film is offered here in its book club edition, which is the first hardcover edition. The book is tight and square in its light gray boards binding with blue-violet lettering on the spine of the book. The book has the correct 1st issue gutter code S27 on page 183. The book is not spine-leaned; also, unusual thus in that copies of this book sometimes show up with a spine lean. There is no writing in the book; no bookplates; no remainder marks. The dust jacket is not price-clipped because there was no price on the flap of the dust jacket because this is a book club edition. The words “BOOK CLUB EDITION” are printed at the lower edge of the front flap of the dust jacket. The dust jacket has undergone a small amount of restoration, mainly at the upper and lower edges of the spine panel of the dust jacket. There is a touch of wear at the upper and lower edges of the spine panel of the dust jacket; largely unobtrusive. A note on the photos in this listing: the photos of the dust jacket were taken while the dust jacket was encased in a protective Brodart dust jacket protector. Any apparent "smudges" or darkening or discolorations or glare is due to the reflections from the dust jacket protector. I decided not to remove the dust jacket from the dust jacket protector when I took the photos. I can provide photos of the dust jacket without the dust jacket protector on the dust jacket, if necessary. The great and famous and iconic dust jacket artwork depicting Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and Princess Lea is by the artist John Berkey. There are a number of photographs from the film that are dispersed throughout the book.
