So when we refer to "driver" or "driver side" we are referring to the left side from the perspective of someone sitting in the car, facing forward. - Inboard vs. outboard: Individual seats have a side nearest the door of the vehicle. We refer to that side as "outboard." The side nearest the center console of the vehicle, we refer to as "inboard." - Seat base vs. seat back: The seat base is the section of the seat on which your weight mostly rests when you sit. The seat back is the section of the seat against which your back leans. - Thigh bolsters: Drivers and passengers come in many shapes and sizes. By person, the optimal length of the seat base varies. To enable the seat base length to be configured optimally for the person seated, some E30 front seats can effectively make the seat base longer or shorter by a few more inches. This is done by moving forward or rearward a horizontal extra section in front of the main horizontal seat base. Moving it forward extends the horizontal seating area. Moving it rearward reduces the horizontal seating area. Moving it is done by turning a rounded, triangular black plastic knob on the outboard side of the seat base. Some refer to this extra horizontal section as a thigh bolster. - Comfort vs. sport: Comfort vs. sport seats have some structural similarities, and have a few minor components in common, but they also have significant structural differences, and all of the major components are different. One easy way to tell them apart: Only sport seats have thigh bolsters. Also, comfort seats have relatively flat surfaces whereas the sport seats are more bucket-shaped, presumably to keep the person in their seat during spirited driving. Each E30 front seat uses two seat hinges, though really it is a complex mechanism, and not just a hinge. There is one seat hinge inboard and one outboard. So, two variations so far. Only the outboard seat hinge has a black plastic handle. So, four variations so far. There are two styles for this black plastic handle: shaped like an arc, or shaped like an elongated letter letter "S" -- so, six variations so far. Each seat hinge has a high-pressure gas tube in the lower area. Some seat hinges also have a high-pressure gas tube that connects to the seat back. At the seat hinge, the gas tube is attached to a stud affixed to the upright steel finger of the seat hinge. Every outboard seat hinge has this stud. Inboard seat hinges have this stud only in the case of sport seats. So, eight variations: - Driver inboard with stud for gas tube - Driver inboard without stud for gas tube - Driver outboard with arc-shaped plastic handle - Driver outboard with S-shaped plastic handle - Passenger inboard with stud for gas tube - Passenger inboard without stud for gas tube - Passenger outboard with arc-shaped plastic handle - Passenger outboard with S-shaped plastic handle On the two-door coupe or convertible E30 cars, the seat can tilt forward to make it easier for rear passengers to get in or out. This feature is enabled by a mechanism in the seat hinge. However, all E30 seat hinges have this mechanisnm. On 4-door cars, it is simply not used.QualityThe part we are offering here is a used but genuine BMW part.
