The final segment of the race requires measured use of the whip in order to spur the horse on, as excessive whipping will cause speed to drop significantly Away from the track, players will need to engage in the day-to-day activities of scheduling new race meetings, purchasing new horses, breeding new champions (young foals take on the combined attributes of both parents), and placing a wagers on the outcome of upcoming events. Although the title offers over 2,500 horses, players are encouraged to breed new champions, and are assisted in doing so by a series of mini-games that affect the final statistics of the newborn. The jockey, too, can improve as the season endures. In a departure from Tecmo's previous effort, Gallop Racer 2003 allows gambling during the actual season, however this revised system only allows players to bet on their own horses.
