Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare January 4th, 1965 playbill from the Pre-Broadway tryout of the "Sherlock Holmes" musical "BAKER STREET" which played the Shubert Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts. (The production would open February 16th, 1965 at the Broadway Theatre in New York City and run for 311 performances.) ..... The musical starred FRITZ WEAVER, MARTIN GABEL and INGA SWENSON (all three shown in the cover photo) and featured PETER SALLIS, PATRICK HORGAN, MARTIN WOLFSON, PADDY EDWARDS, TEDDY GREEN, DANIEL KEYES, JAY NORMAN, CHRISTOPHER WALKEN and dancer and future director/ choreographer TOMMY TUNE (in his Broadway debut) ..... CREDITS: Book by JEROME COOPERSMITH based on "The Sherlock Holmes" stories by SIR ARTHUR CONAN DOYLE; Music and Lyrics by MARIAN GRUDEFF and RAYMOND JESSEL; Sets designed by OLIVER SMITH; Costumes designed by MOTLEY; Choreographed by LEE BECKER THEODORE; Directed by HAROLD PRINCE; Produced by ALEXANDER H. COHEN ..... DETAILS: The 46 page playbill measures 6" X 9" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and bios of each of the leading actors but with the exception of the front cover, no cast photos. Includes a two page ad promoting the Broadway Opening of "BAKER STREET" on February 13th, 1965 at New York's Broadway Theatre (third scanned image). The actual opening was delayed three days ..... BONUS: The playbill includes a full page AL HIRSCHFELD illustration of BUDDY HACKETT as "Hamlet", number 11 in the series "Unlikely Casting" .....
