Description: French Model 1874 "Gras" Sword Bayonet Listed here is an original condition, numbers matching, M1874 bayonet from 1875. This 148 years old sabre was the last of the French "sword-type" bayonets. It was manufactured to fit the French Model 1874 "Gras" Infantry Rifle. These were manufactured from 1874 to about 1885. This particular example was manufactured in Châtellerault in September of 1875. It is marked as production number 33091. These bayonets have a solid brass pommel with integral latching mechanism. Grips are wood. Crossguard is steel with upper guard being the muzzle-ring, lower guard forming a hooked quillon. The blade is steel - well made - and triangular in form with the manufacturing details engraved on the top of it. The quality of this old item is just absolutely amazing. Obviously, this wasn't an item subcontracted to some overseas sweat shop to produce. As much love as anyone could ever pour into the manufacturing of such a bayonet, through what had to be some obsessively passionate craftsmanship, has been put into this sturdy length of steel, brass, and wood. Heck, why am I selling it? ...I don't know ...too many other things in storage I suppose... but I digress... I believe the pictures reveal the museum quality of its original condition and naturally used patina. Now, don't let this opportunity to own such a beautiful, high grade piece of historical foreign cutlery pass you up. Buy it now or make an offer... free shipping is included. Best of luck and happy bidding!
