Conger, contains one page on White House letterhead, measures 8.75 by 7 inches, created in Washington, DC on November 14, 1936, in fine condition with toning, and accompanied with the original mailing envelope. “I WAS DELIGHTED TO HEAR FROM YOU AND AM INDEED GRATEFUL TO YOU AND MRS. CONGER FOR YOUR KIND CONGRATULATIONS. YOU BOTH HAVE BEEN GRAND AND THE GOOD RESULTS PROVE IT.” Roosevelt wrote this letter just eleven days after winning the 1936 United States presidential election, which was held on Tuesday, November 3, 1936. In the midst of the Great Depression, incumbent Democratic President Roosevelt defeated Republican Governor of Kansas Alf Landon in what was the greatest electoral landslide since the rise of hegemonic control between the Democratic and Republican parties in the 1850s. Roosevelt won 523 electoral votes or 98.49%, which remains the highest percentage of the electoral vote won by any candidate since 1820. ROOSEVELT WON 523 ELECTORAL VOTES RECEIVING THE HIGHEST PERCENTAGE WON SINCE 1820 President Roosevelt would later appoint Conger to serve as a judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York in Manhattan in 1938. Among prominent matters before Judge Conger were cases arising from the United States Senate’s contempt citation of notorious underworld figure Frank Costello and other criminal trials of smugglers, gamblers, and narcotics dealers.
