Theodore Gericault - Théodore Géricault The sinking of the colonial frigate la Méduse off the coast of present-day Mauritania on 2 July 1816, shook France from the Restoration. Of the 150 or so passengers and crew refugees on a makeshift raft, towed by boats and then abandoned by order of Captain Duroy de Chaumareys, less than 15 had survived. This drama was immortalized by Théodore Géricault (Rouen 1791-Paris 1824) in one of the most famous paintings of the Louvre, Le Radeau de la Méduse, revealed at the Salon of 1819. In his early days, Géricault devoted himself to the painting of horses, his passion, and military themes. Returning from Italy in the autumn of 1817, he was looking for new topical issues. The atrocious murder of the former magistrate Fualdes, in Rodez, inspired him to the idea of a great composition, finally abandoned. For his first important work, it was the Medusa affair that he retained, fascinated by the account of two survivors. Rather than the sinking of the frigate, it depicts the raft and its passengers, abandoned in the open sea. In raws, some agonize among the corpses, others straight up, seeing a ship, their last hope for survival. The composition is developed using wax figures arranged on a model of the raft, manufactured at the request of Géricault by the former carpenter of the Medusa. Transforming his workshop into an annex to the morgue, the artist painted after nature of the heads and limbs cut, observed in the hospital the ravages of the disease. On the Normandy coast, he carried out studies of sky and sea. Epic and terrifying, the final work, 7 m long, resented the public from 1819. A tragic vision of human destiny, it has established itself as one of the major works of romanticism, within universal reach.
