Description: A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany this specimen. Here is a large and mostly complete vertebra of an Ichthyosaurus, from The Jurassic. 190-150 million years ago. It was from the Lias (limestone deposits) near Dorset County, England. Ichthyosaurus was a large marine reptile whose name means "fish lizard". The first complete Ichthyosaurus was found in 1836 by Mary Anning. Ichythosaurus have been found with babies inside them, showing that they were viviparous, in that the embryos developed inside the mother rather than laying eggs. This vertebra measures about 7 inches at the longest measurement. It weighs 2 lbs. 8.65 oz. It has been coated with clear stabilizer for greater strength, as is standard procedure. It has a complete or nearly complete body (centrum), pedicles, neural canal (the hole that has nerves go through it) and some of the lamina. An excellent-looking vertebra of this very interesting marine animal. We are happy to enclose a COA (Certificate of Authenticity). Some words of caution about COA’s: Do not let them become a substitute for learning about the specimens.
