During his life he worked as a plasterer, stone carver, muralist, sign painter, and cartoonist. He is considered a folk outsider artist but preferred to be called an urban street artist. His art is in the permanent collection of the National Museum of American Art Smithsonian Institution. Brown said, “During the depression I taught art classes in order to make money. Many of the projects we created were used to make money for the hungry.” The Rosenaks cover in their folk art book that “Brown is one of our favorite artists.” Smoky was a master storyteller and very open, post-sobriety, talking about the demons he had struggled with and managed to tame. The Rosenaks authored The Museum of American Folk Art Encyclopedia of 20th Century American Folk Art and Artists. This grouping of 815 lots Self-taught Art, Quilts, Canes of folk art legends as; Bill Traylor, Sam Doyle, Mary T. Smith, Juanita Rogers and hundreds of others. Chuck and Jan Rosenak are widely regarded as authorities in the field of American folk art. They amassed a large number of contemporary folk art pieces and authored four books on Folk Art.
