Wyoming " Flame Sponges ", self named, were discovered over a decade ago by myself and a friend while exploring the White River Formation here in central Wyoming. After seeing over a thousand in nature, we surmised that these where an ancient sponge, or something close to it, from the ancient oceans that once covered Wyoming. After one was tested, if was confirmed to be formed in a salt water environment. This very special agate went through multiple chemistry events in nature, in my opinion. The first preservation formed as a horizontal accumulation of minerals that was then " re-boiled " in a secondary event that helped create the wonderful pluming and textures that vary from specimen to specimen. No two " Sponges " are exactly alike. The range of beautiful colors can widely vary from sponge to sponge. This wonderfully detailed " Prairie Agate " only occur in Wyoming. Most prairie agates found in other states only display " melted " colors internally when cut. Photos have been taken dry, and with oil on the cut faces only to enhance the internal colors of this specimen.
