Description: Introduction: You may have noticed that my price is a bit higher than other eBay vendors. While that may be true, my price is based on offering a ready-to-use product that has been cleaned, adjusted and fine-tuned to work as designed. “Yes, you can buy a used Kanna on eBay for $30-$50 US, but you will not be buying a Kanna that is set up properly and ready to use. Disassembly, cleaning, sharpening of the blade and chip breaker, flattening of the sole of the Kanna and tuning it to the traditional two-contact-point configuration, then testing (see my videos of performance) will take you many hours, especially if you are untrained at setting up Japanese hand planes. It is generally said that even a carpenter needs five years to become proficient with a plane, and it is the most difficult tool among carpentry tools. My pricing includes all the work needed to restore the Kanna to a fine-tuned level of performance as shown in my videos. And it is ready for you to use right out of the box so you can focus on learning how to use the plane. ====================== Product: 峻峰 / Shun-hou , Sun-8 (寸八), about 70mm, used. Double-edged blade, used Dai. · Blade: 71mm Wide x 112mm Tall, Used The blade was slightly rusty, so I removed the rust and dyed it black. Blacksmith: Chiyozuru-Korehide. The words "Korhide-work” is engraved on the bottom left of the blade. · Chip-breaker: 62mm Wide x 51mm Tall, original, used. The construction of the Chip-breaker is solid. Although it is treated as a second-hand product, it is actually an unused long-term storage item because the corners on both sides of the Chip-breaker were almost straight and could not be used even if it was inserted. · Wood Bottom Dai: 87mm Wide x 278mm Length x 35mm Thickness, used. Dai was gathering dust and was a long-term storage item. The cutting edge of the blade did not come out of the bottom of the Dai, so I think it was unused. However, the rust had moved to Dai wood, so I scraped off Dai a bit and applied epoxy resin. The gap in the blade-mouth was so narrow that the cutting edge of the chip-breaker was barely visible, and the chips were jammed, so the gap was widened slightly. Therefore, I think that even intermediate users can handle it. The surface of the Dai-sole is tuned in two-point touch. The planing test was performed on the usual SPF wood forward and on a mixture of reverse and forward surfaces with knots. I was able to plane on knotty surfaces without any problems, resulting in a glossy and smooth surface. There is no need to press down on the surface underneath the plane; just pull it lightly and the shavings come out smoothly, making this a plane that everyone will be satisfied with it. =============================== When buying a Kanna, especially for those new to Japanese hand planes, you must learn how to set it up properly to provide the desired result. This is also true of brand new Kanna. As stated above, this involves not only flattening the back and sharpening the blade-edge, but also reshaping the blade, sharpening and flattening the chip-breaker blade (counter-blade) and flattening and tuning the sole of wood bottom “Dai”. This not only takes many hours, but to the person without experience, it is very difficult to accomplish. If you are buying a Kanna for the first time, the following video will help you through the set-up and fine-tuning process. (See website below). This is your chance to purchase a Kanna that has been properly set up and tested by an experienced craftsman and is ready to use upon arrival. You can avoid all the work of tuning and proper set up and focus on learning proper technique.
