Description: This is a masterful and Fine Antique Old 19th c. European Old Master Oil Painting on Artist Board, by early - mid 19th century Prussian architectural and Romantic genre painter, Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim (1808 - 1879.) This artwork depicts a fascinating domestic scene, featuring a clergyman and his assistant collecting tithes from a rural peasant community. A farmer bows on one knee in the lower left corner, holding a large basket of eggs in front of him. In the center of the scene, the clergyman dutifully collects tithes from a young and beautiful maiden, who places a gold coin in priest's coin purse. To the right of the image, an old man on crutches, and presumably his son, wait for the blessings and good tidings of the priest. Signed in faded but legible writing: "F.E. Meyerheim" in the lower right corner. Additionally, there is an old ink stamped auction number and collectors mark on the verso of this piece (photo 24.) Approximately 18 1/2 x 25 1/8 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 15 x 22 inches. This artwork likely dates to the first half of the 1800's. Good condition for nearly 200 years of age, with some light fine craquelure throughout, light scuffs and scratches to the painted surface, pin sized areas of paint loss, and moderate scuffing, edge wear, and gilding loss to the gilded wood frame (please see photos.) Meyerheim created an impressive sheet during his training with Johann Adam Breysig in Danzig, possibly on site at the Marienburg. The Marienburg became a place of pilgrimage for artists, romantics, and scholars after Gilly's drawings became known Friedrich Eduard Meyerheim (7 January 1808, Danzig – 18 January 1879, Berlin) was a German painter. Biography Meyerheim came from a family of artists with a long history in Danzig (now Gdansk, Poland). He received his first training from his father, Karl Friedrich Meyerheim (1780-1837), a decorative painter. After further studies with the architect and painter Johann Adam Breysig, he went to Berlin in 1830 and enrolled at the Prussian Academy of Art. His teachers there were Eduard Daege and Johann Gottfried Niedlich.After graduating, he wandered about with his friend, the future Prussian court architect Heinrich Strack, and produced numerous architectural drawings, primarily of churches and older Backsteingotik brick buildings.
