Description: Ficus religiosa is a tree in the Moraceae family. A native from the Indian subcontinent. Some common names include Bo Tree, Bodhi Tree, Peepul Tree, Sacred Fig, ashwattha, or peepal tree. This tree is considered to have religious significance in Buddhism, Hindu, and Jainism. This is the tree where Guatama attained his enlightenment. It is the state of some Indian states as well. It can grow to almost 100 feet tall with a trunk diameter of 10 feet. The leaves are spectacular; they are heart-shaped with drip tips on the ends of the leaves. They are 6-7 inches across and 7 inches long. The color on them changes in the cool season to a beautiful red and orange color. The fruits are small, only 1/2" in diameter. They turn purple like many figs when ripe. These trees can live a long time. It has been recorded living 1500-3000 years old in its native habitats. It can grow in most soils and will prefer full sun for best results. It is visited by wildlife such as birds, bees, and butterflies during the late winter until early spring. Zones 10-11 Germination Sow seeds 1/8" deep and tamp down the seeds. Lightly cover with vermiculite. Keep moist in a bright spot. Do not cover with plastic and keep temperatures around 65-75F. Germination is in 7-30 days.
