Description: Item #3396 The fossils in this set were formed from the plants that make up our coal. The fossils are found in the shale layers above and below the coal seams during mining. These are very old plants that are about 300 million years old. They come from what is know as the Carboniferous, Pennsylvanian time period. What you are getting is a fern specimen which is called "Pecopteris". These fossils are found in many locations in west central Indiana. The fossil was formed as a nodules that was split open. It is very difficult to split the nodule and get both pieces intact. You are getting half of the nodule as the other half did not survive when it was cracked open. I will label each specimen with its proper name. This fossil has good detail. The weight of the specimen is 3.0 ounces (85grams). The size is 2 1/2 inches long x 2 x 1/2 inches. NOTE: There is another fossil on the back which is probably the same fossil. If you want to make it appear better, you can place this other side in a little diluted vinegar overnight. You only want just this side in the vinegar( 1/4 in. or less deep), then rinse and let dry. Have fun !
