Description: Impressive oil on canvas modern painting, "Sonata", 1956, signed at lower left and again on the reverse by the noted Mexican-born artist largely associated with Cuba, FELIPE ORLANDO (1911-2001). A partial label from Galeria San Martin, Mexico City, remains on the stretcher. The piece measures 31" by 37" on the stretchers and 32 1/2" by 38 1/2" in the narrow gold framing. The artist's full name was Felipe Orlando Garcia Murciano. Born in Tenosique, Mexico, he studied at the University of Havana in Cuba and with noted artists Jorge Arche and Víctor Manuel. Orlando was a founding member of the Asociación de Pintores y Escultores de Cuba (APEC) and was a professor at the Universidad de las Américas and the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México. The artist's work was exhibited regularly in solo and group shows until 1995 and is in the permanent collections of the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes in Mexico City, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Havana, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, D.C.. The painting is in good vintage condition. There is extensive "alligatoring" of the paint, but it is evenly dispersed. From normal viewing distance this is much less obvious.
