Description: ABOUTTHE AUTHER Kenneth E Hassebroek begin his life on a 160-acre farm located two miles south and four miles west of Sibley, Iowa which is in the northwest part of the state. He grew up as the fourth oldest of his five brothers and five sisters, which included one set of twin girls. Ken attended Holman #17 rural one room country school until he was half way through eighth grade. In October 10, 1963 we had a farm sale and sold all of our farm equipment and farm animals. This was a sad and emotional event for me. I was so upset that I even turned down a cookie when offered to me. Ken graduated from West Lyon Community High school, Inwood, Iowa in 1968 which was a time when the Vietnam war was reported daily on the six o’clock nightly news. The military draft was in place at that time I knew my days were numbered so I beat the draft board system and enlisted in he US Navy. While serving in the US Navy, after boot camp, and the Navy’s “A” school, Ken was assigned as an aircraft electrician to one of the Navy’s few experimental squadrons. Ken volunteered for flight crew status and was assigned to various experimental project flight crews where Ken traveled to four continents, seventeen countries, and thirty-two states, including one tour of duty in Vietnam in support of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam Studies Observation Group, (MACVSOG). Ken received an honorable discharge from the US Navy on a Friday in September of1972 and the following Monday he was sitting in English composition class at Elsworth Community College, Iowa Falls, Iowa. After graduation with an associate’s degree in business he continued his education at Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD where he received a bachelor’s degree in accounting with a minor in computer science. Ten years later Ken would earn a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha, Omaha, NE. Ken has been employed as a Financial Auditor, General Manager, Controller, Chief Financial Officer, and Chief Operating Officer. Today, Ken works parttime in his Chief Financial Officer consulting business assisting business owners become better at their operations, management, staffing, and financial performance. Ken also does "book talks”, to various service groups and other relevant organizations. I am personally wired in such a way that I have a very high attention to detail and consistently score high on this trait when I have taken behavioral tests. This has helped me through the years as I see details in events and situations that others may have missed and you will see this urge manifest itself as I present lots of details in my writing style. Twenty plus years ago I was attempting to draft my annual Christmas letter to family and friends when I was stalled due to too much content. The story I was attempting to tell made me realize that this is not a Christmas letter story, but rather this story is a book. The result was “Farmboy in Uniform”. Ken’s motivation for writing this book is based on the fundamental belief that everyone who has served in any branch of the military has a story to tell with a lesson learned, but tragically, many times their story is never told. It is my hope that when an opportunity presents itself that you would take the time to ask any and all veterans that you encounter about their military service and let them tell their stories. This has been a long journey which has uncomfortably pushed me out of my comfort zone, and at times stressed my will to continue to its outer limits. However; because I have a low tolerance for failure, I pressed on with the encouragement of my family and friends.
