This very fine quality Victorian Secretary Desk appears to be wearing its original finish, weighs approximately 265 pounds, and measures 85 ½” in total height (from the floor to the top of the crown), 77 ¼” in height with the top crown removed for transport, 50 ½” in total width (crown), 47” in width (body), and 22” in depth. The space from the floor to the underside of the pull-out writing surface measures 28 ¾” in height. The pull out desk surface measures 20” in width and 17 ¾” in depth and the felt portion measures 15 ¾” in width and 14 ½” in depth. The bookcase portion features five adjustable shelves that measure 9 ½” in depth and 20 ½” in width. This fabulous Bookcase also has the maker’s label on the back that reads Rockford Union Furniture Company, Rockford, IL. This gorgeous Burl Walnut Victorian Aesthetic Period Side by Side Cylinder Roll Secretary Desk Bookcase is in excellent condition for its age, has many wonderful details and is just waiting for its place of prominence in your home! The top of this gorgeous piece is adorned with a lovely ornate and removable arched crown that is adorned with open carved graduated spindles in the middle encased on each side with beautiful recessed panels adorned with powerful carved leaves and scrolls. You will notice that the elegant sides of this lovely ornate crown are orchestrated in a pierced foliate scroll design. Handsome turned finials on the shoulders with foliate scroll carvings beneath connect the front to the elegant sides. This lovely ornate removable arched crown rests on the elegant top that is graced with powerful moulding with horizontal burl accent beneath. You will also notice the lovely fluted moulding that goes all the way down down the front sides of the body of this lovely piece. The Bookcase portion of this piece is adorned with a beautiful door graced with burl accents and incised carved Greek Key motif along with additional incised carvings. You will note that the glass on the door appears to be original and ample storage is found on the five adjustable fluted front shelves. An intact lock and brass key escutcheon is found on the glass door and a working tasseled key is included. The Secretary portion of this piece is graced with the original beveled mirrored display area that is adorned with a pierced half-moon shaped configuration with shell and scroll design along with carved stick and ball motif, carved musical note, and carved leaf and has a smaller attached display shelf with a turned post support. This top space would be a perfect area to display a vase or other special treasured piece of art. Beneath this display area, you will find a lovely burl-clad cylinder roll door, dressed with beautiful fluted moulding on the sides, rosette roundels at the top and ebonized knob pulls with brass centers is found on the Secretary side. This lovely burl-clad cylinder roll door opens to reveal a fabulous interior compartment that consists of five cubbies along with a petite center drawer with an ebonized knob pull with brass center. A new black felt writing surface measuring 15 ¾” wide by 14 ½” deep completes the interior compartment. The total size of the pull out desk surface is 20” in width and 17 ¾” in depth. Plentiful storage is found in the three fancy dovetailed, raised burl-paneled drawers on the Secretary side. Each of these fancy drawers are dressed with luscious raised burl panels, fluting details brass key escutcheons, and absolutely beautiful period brass pulls indicative of the finest Victorian Aesthetic Period design. Intact working locks are found in these drawers and a tasseled key is included. You will be sure to notice the elegant carved and fluted moulding found to the sides of these fancy drawers. Finally, wooden castors on the feet of Fabulous Rare Burl Walnut Victorian Aesthetic Period Cylinder Roll Side by Side Secretary Desk Bookcase with Spindle Mirrored Gallery and Fancy Carved Crown (Circa: 1880) provide ease of movement. We have never had the opportunity to own a piece quite like this one. It has been our experience that most Victorian Side by Sides are typically constructed of Oak, and are slant front Secretary’s not Cylinder Roll Secretary’s so this Walnut piece with luscious burl accents is a very rare find indeed. What we do know is that it is very special and would be quite beautiful in the home or office of the distinguished collector of Walnut Aesthetic Period Victoriana!
