Description: Uber RARE California Southern Railroad Company SPECIMEN Bond Certificate dated 1886 for $1000. Carries the usual SPECIMEN stamps and is in Extra Fine condition for its age. Punch stamp cancellations. Very small edge tears at folds (tape reinforcement on reverse.) Beautiful locomotive vignette. I have 2 for sale, the other is an unissued/unsigned certificate. These are the only two of this type I have seen in 20+ years of collecting and the only ones on EBay at time of listing!! (Didn't really want to let them go!) Specimen stock certificates are certificates that were archived by printers and the company as perfect examples of the company's stock or bond issue. Specimen's can sometimes be identified by their 'specimen' stamp, stamped holes spelling 'specimen', or they are often issued with a serial number of a series of zeros. Often, they are also issued with no serial number at all. Specimen certificates can also be unissued, numbered and stamped if other specimens were not available to the company. All of these attributes make the specimen stock certificate much rarer than the large quantity issued version of the share. Many enthusiasts collect specimens as a whole new category of Scripophily. These California Railroad bonds are SCARCE and in high demand. Very nice Historical document that is 138 years old! Would look FANTASTIC Framed!! Thank you for looking.
