Description: Extinct Horsetail Fossil Calamites; Very Nice Specimen Approximately 7”x4”x3”Calamites, an ancient fossil relative of the modern horsetail, is an extinct sphenopsid plant known for its large reed-like, jointed stems. Fossils of its stems and branches are found in shales, siltstones, and sandstones. These fossils feature segmented structure with fragments ranging from several inches to over a foot in length. I acquired this particular specimen about 10 years ago from a miner in the coal shale mines of Western Pennsylvania. It’s a very fine, clean example of how huge horsetails were back in the Carboniferous Period, more than 300 million years ago. The surface details and joint are super clear. A big solid specimen of nearly 2 pounds. I’m in the process of selling my collectibles accumulated over 60 years of passionate collecting around the world. They will include natural history specimens, living plants, art pieces, antiquarian books, and numerous other treasures. Stay tuned…new listings will be added approximately weekly, and in total will number many hundreds of rare items. All proceeds after expenses will be donated to the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance global conservation projects.
