Description: With "The Etruscans" Venice once again hosts an exhibition dedicated to one of the key Eelds of archacological research in Italy, an exhibition not only of historical importance but one that will undoubtedly fascinate today's public. As in the case of the 1966 exhibition, which illustrated the parallel history of the Greeks on our peninsula, this event would never have been possible, given its size and scope, without the collaboration of Palazzo Grassi, one of the world's leading organizers of exhibitions, and the Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, with its long tradition of exhibition experience and its technical know-how. Once again we are able to fully appreciate this joint effort on the part of the public and private sectors, together with the role played by the territorial agencies in their campaigns to protect and properly exploit the cultural patrimony of Italy. It is no mere coincidence that this collaboration is bearing its fruit at the same time that an organizational reform of the Ministry, in line with the general principles established by new laws, goes into effect. Among other things, it will increase state participation in the specific field of archaeology, which, as we all well know, is not only the science which investigates past civilizations through material evidence, but also, and even more, one that studies mankind's continuity and activity on the territory. The exhibition is also the result of the collaboration of international scholars, renowned foreign institutions in possession of important Etruscan finds, and many local museums and individual collectors. The Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali owes its sincere gratitude and appreciation to each and everyone of them. Inasmuch as Venice represents an extraordinary world stage, it will be up to international public opinion to make the final judgement, but apart from the inevitable (and indispensable) diversity of opinions, the exhibition of "The Etruscans" will certainly be deemed a milestone in our knowledge of these people, by now so distant in time, but whom we still recognize as being one of the roots of Italian civilization.
