Description: An antique, 1917, Steel Engraving print / etching, Art Postcard on cream cardstock of the old Rhine River Bridge in Bonn. It was destroyed in WWII.It is signed P Matthes Koln 17, within the print in the lower left corner.I believe this indicates the print is circa 1917. This steel engraving is titled 'Bonn, Rheinbrucke'. It is labeled 'No. 2. Oskar Paul Matthes (1872-1956) created a series of art postcards that he designed with city and landscape views from the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany. This Art Card Series began in 1900. Wiki says Matthes used both lithography and copper engraving, but, I have also seen, his work described as using steel engraving. Matthes was a German painter and graphic artist. For a time, he lived and worked in the Netherlands, in Switzerland, and in Germany. He was self-taught. Size: Card is about 3 3/4" X 6" and image is about 3" X 4 1/2"Condition is used. Unposted. Shows signs of age (discolored, soiled paper/worn edges) as expected of a piece of this age - see photos. Image, however, is clear and crisp.
