Description: This is an Important Historical Document (hopefully it gets to a museum). This may be the only legal document that is still in existence (I'm trying to research, but haven't found any other legal documents yet). This 1807 legal document was created by the very famous Silversmith EPHRAIM BRASHER (EB) who lived next to George Washington in New York, EPHRAIM BRASHER signature is at the top and bottom of this document. Condition: Some yellowing due to age and edge wear, it was a folded document, top fold has separated from the document and the bottom fold to very close to being separated. But a good restorer can fix this easily. See photos for condition. Measures (inches): 12" x 7" (unfolded) and will be shipped in a clear protective sleeve flat. Provenance: This came from a long time collector who passed away and it was put into auction in the 1980's. I don't have any other history on the previous owners. This document is original and not a reproduction. I take pride in my eBay store and researched tediously to get you the facts about this piece. History:Ephraim Brasher (1744-1828), New York, NYBrasher's address in 1789-1790 was listed as number five Cherry Street in New York City, which was next door to George Washington's residence. New York was the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. During the late eighteenth century, one of the most fashionable locations in the city was Cherry Hill, which lies just north of the Brooklyn Bridge today. Cherry Street was the home of Ephraim Brasher (1744-1828), a distinguished goldsmith and silversmith. Brasher regulated precious metal coins for the bank, carefully checking their fineness and weight, and stamping them with his oval-shaped hallmark containing his initials’ EB’ if they met the correct standards. His hallmark became a guarantee of quality, enabling bank clerks to accept coins without checking their weight. Several examples of foreign gold have been discovered counter stamped with his quality mark.
