Description: Elco 80-Foot PT Boat On Deck Color Series 5605 by David Doyle 2009Paperback When most people hear "PT boat" the mental image that comes to mind is that of the 80 ft. patrol torpedo boat built by Electric Launch Company inBayonne, New Jersey. These nimble warships, which were built primarily of mahogany planks, not plywood as popular culture believes, by late war delivered the same fire-power as had early-war destroyers, but did this at a speed of 40 knots. Thehigh speed was attributed to the trio of Packard marine engines, delivering 1,200 to 1,500 horsepower each, depending on boat class. These V-12s gulpedhigh-octane aviation fuel at the whopping rate of474 gallons per hour! Three hundred twenty-six of the 80-foot wooden wonders were built, with 296 of them seeing service in the US Navy; the remainder went to the USSR under Lend-Lease. The PT-565 class boats were the final and hardest hitting of the 80-foot ELCOs. PT-617, shown on these pages, is the sole surviving intact example of these boats. With details of specific military equipment using color and black and white archival photographs of the equipment . 80 pages.
