Description: Cherry elaeagnus, Goumi. A deciduous elaeagnus from Japan and China, a spreading shrub to 3m (10 ft) high, nitrogen-fixing and producing an abundance of large cherry-sized dark red edible fruits. Good hedging plant. Growth 2m (7 ft) in 10 years; hardy to about -20°C. The root system is highly branched (1-1. 5 m beyond the projection of the crown), it is mainly located in the upper layer of the soil. An important biological feature of the root system is the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen with root nodules. Shoots are often with small spines. Gumi fruits in mid-June. The leaves are elliptical at the top, whole-edged. The flowers are small, bisexual, elongated, with a strong aroma. The fruits are oblong-oval (1.5-2 cm). The fruits hang on thin long stalks. Inside the fruit there is an oblong bone with a furrowed surface, surrounded by pulp. The color of the fruits changes from green to yellow and red as they mature; when ripe, the fruits do not crumble. The period from pollination to fruit ripening is about 45 days. HOW TO GROW: Goumi seeds should be soaked for 2 days. Then put into semi-moist perlite/coconut fiber/ or another semi-moist substrate and placed into fridge with temperature +1-+5 degrees Celsius for 2-3 months. After that they will grow well and quickly. Without this procedure they might not germinate.
