This print is a reproduction of the lovely 1941 painting by the famous Cuban painter Mariano Rodríguez (1912 - 1990), whose work can be found in major museum collections worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The original "El Beso" painting is believed to be in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana. Another Mariano painting sold at auction in New York in recent years for more than $1 million. Mariano's luxuriant paintings have been reproduced in an offset format before. But we believe this is the first time the EL BESO painting has been offered as an affordable offset poster in the quarter century since the artist's death. Born in Havana in 1912, Mariano was an important member of the 20th century Cuban avant-garde, a self-taught artist who was influenced by Matisse, Picasso as well as the modern Mexican masters of the 1930s and 1940s. Using colors that recalled his island nation's tropical environment, Mariano often painted distinctive figures from everyday Cuban life. El Beso is a fine (and important) example with elegant colors. In the years since Mariano's death in Havana in 1990, his paintings have widely sought at auctions in the United States and Europe. Overall condition of this poster, which measures approximately 13 1/2 x 19 1/2 inches, is good.
