Description: Rare 1886 first edition of this work which is profusely illustrated by one of the best known French military illustrators of the 19th century. He was known for his depictions of the franco-prussian war of the 1870s. These volumes are very large in size- elephant folio. You can actually see where the printing block made an impression on the thick paper. Condition: very good; there is some toning to the paper as could be expected; some of the tissue paper which protects the images is folded and browned/ toned with age. Please note that I believe these are missing the colored plates.
