COLLECOR'S NOTE is included. Dee Brown, who lived from 1908-2002, was an American novelist, historian and librarian. Born in Louisiana, Brown grew up in Ouachita County, Arkansas, but Brown's mother relocated to Little Rock so he and his brother and two sisters could attend a better high school. While attending home games by the baseball team the Arkansas Travelers, he became acquainted with Chief Yellow Horse, a pitcher. Brown enrolled at Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, Arkansas, where his mentor, history professor Dean D. McBrien, helped give him the idea to become a writer. They traveled west along with other students on two occasions. Later Brown became a librarian for the U.S. Department of Agriculture from 1934 to 1942 and from 1948 to 1972, he was a librarian at the University of Illinois. The years between 1860 and 1890 conjure up fascinating images of an American West filled with gold miners, gunslingers, homesteaders, schoolmarms, bounty hunters, and pony-express riders but the West had a darker side. In 1971, Brown's published "My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West," an authentic account of the destruction of the Indian nation as told by those Indians who survived. From transcripts of treaty councils and other formal meetings with U.S. government officials, Brown crafted the moving narrative. Initially trusting of their white brothers, Indian leaders such as LITTLE CROW of the Santee-Sioux and BLACK KETTLE of the Cheyenne reluctantly encouraged their people to accept the new ways of the settlers, believing there was enough land and natural abundance for everyone. The tribal chiefs signed treaties with the "Great father in Washington." As Red Cloud, the great chief of the Sioux said, "the white man made us many promises, more than I can ever remember, but they never kept but one; they promised to take our land, and they took it." Some of the famous Indian chiefs include BEAR TOOTH, CONCHISE, RUNNING ANTELOPE and SITTING BULL. Brown quotes General Philip Sheridan who made the legendary declaration "the only good Indians I ever saw were dead." But other white Americans supported the red man including ABRAHAM LINCOLN who saved 264 SANTEE SIOUX from being hanged by the Army in what was boasted to be "America's greatest mass execution." William Bent, an influential settler, also tried in vain to prevent the massacre at Sand Creek. SITTING BULL is cited for his quote: "One does not sell the earth upon which the people walk." Red Cloud said: "There was no hope on earth, and God seemed to have forgotten us." Just before daybreak on December 15, 1890, forty-three Indian police surrounded Sitting Bull's log cabin. Sergeant Red Tomahawk forced Sitting Bull toward his horse, but Catch-the-Bear threw off his blanket, brought up a rife and fired at Bull Head, wounding him. Red Tomahawk then short Sitting Bull through the head and killed him. Had it not been for the sustaining force of the Ghost Dance religion, the Sioux in their grief and anger over the assassination of Sitting Bull might have risen up against the guns of the soldiers. At the cavalry tent camp on Wounded Knee Creek, the Indians were halted and carefully counted. There were 120 men and 230 women and children. 487 pages, including Notes and an Index.
