Early 19th C CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN TUREEN w/UNDERPLATE-13 5/8 Inch-Blue/Gold

Description: Up for bid is a fine early 19th C American market Chinese export porcelain soup tureen and underplate, descended through the famous Arnold family of Rhode Island. The tureen is about 13 5/8 inches long over the handles by 9 ¼ inches wide and stands about 10 1/2 inches tall. The matching oval underplate is 14 5/8 inches by 11 ¾ inches and about 1 ½ inches tall. The tureen has a typical molded flower and leaves finial, rope twist molded handles, a bellied body and a high flared foot with an unglazed edge. The piece is decorated in overglaze cobalt blue and gold. The piece has a script monogram “A” in a shield with draperies on both sides of the base, both sides of the lid, and in the center of the underplate. The unglazed foot rim of the tureen shows a compact white paste with some adhering kiln grit. The platter has a flat foot with a crosshatched pattern. There are no marks.This tureen and other pieces from the same set descended in the Rogers / Arnold family of Rhode Island. The set was likely purchased by Samuel Greene Arnold Sr., a prominent merchant who married into the Rogers family. His son, Samuel Greene Arnold Jr., was a state historian and US Senator for many years as part of distinguished political career. An old label inside the lid reads “Senator Green”, as shown, though the set descended through his sister. We acquired the set from a direct descendant; it had never been out of the family. We have other plates, platters and serving dishes available, and they will be listed separately if there is interest. Condition on the piece seems to be very good. There are no chips or cracks, though there is wear to the gilding in places and the monogram on the underplate is worn. A very nice piece of historic Chinese export porcelain!
