Description: A magical little carving! Made by Earl Briton of Maryland. Earl Brinton carved wooden tools during World War II as a member of the U.S. Merchant Marine. From that experience he learned the basics of sculpting with wood, such as how long to dry the wood before carving. A retired radar systems designer, he also learned how to interpret designs and use routers, sanders, drill presses and other machines to create intricate details in the wood. Earl Brinton died Friday December 26, at his home in Severn. He was 96 years old. After a long career with Westinghouse as an aircraft tool designer, Earl spent 35 years as a wood sculptor. This is a true piece of regional folk art by a self taught artist and is utterly charming. Measuring 4.75”H X 4.5” Diameter at base, this is either a stand alone piece or could be used in combination with small trinkets to make a charming display. Signed on the bottom “for pat and bill, punky” which was a nickname of the artist. The artist has also identified the woods used in the sculpture: lilac, apple and the bas of dogwood. A terrific composition of a round flat mushroom flanked by two come shaper morrel style mushrooms. Please see my detailed photos as an integral part of the description. Please let me know if you have any questions.
