Description: White Mischief starring Greta Scacchi, Charles Dance, Joss Ackland, Sarah Miles, Geraldine Chaplin, Ray McNally, Murray Head, Hugh Grant, John Hurt and Trevor Howard; directed by Michael Radford who also wrote the screenplay; musical score by George Fenton. The Story: In the years before World War II, the more affluent British settlers in East Africa (Kenya) developed a lifestyle that was famous for its luxury and scandalous for its decadence. In their so-called "Happy Valley" on the slopes of the Aberdare mountains, they built their ranches and villages, made a lot of money and ignored the war clouds gathering over Europe. Some worked hard and most partied hard. As war enveloped Europe, their detachment became more and more scandalous. On the eve of war, the Kenya settlement was rocked by a murder - still the most famous 'unsolved' murder of the British Empire. An older rancher, Sir Henry "Jock" Broughton (expertly played by Joss Ackland) had returned from a trip to England with a wild young bride named Diana (Greta Scacchi). She had married for money, a fact Sir Henry had few illusions about, but what he did not expect was that she would quickly flaunt her cynicism in the colony. She fell under the spell of the handsome young Earl of Erroll (Charles Dance), a shameless womanizer. Their affair scandalized the colony until January 24, 1941, when the Earl of Erroll was found shot to death in his car, not far from the exclusive club where he had last been seen with Diana. Comment: White Mischief is a beautifully filmed crime melodrama, based on the best-selling book by James Fox. The star-studded cast delivers first rate performances - very believable as English aristocrats. Charles Dance was born to play the Earl of Erroll and Joss Ackland is always a pleasure to watch on screen. Dame Sarah Miles delivers some of the best lines of the movie - the very personification of aristocratic detachment. Ms Scacchi was in her prime and delivers a beautiful and revealing performance. This is a superb and very entertaining movie on many levels. Per the label, the film is presented in full screen 4:3 format, with 107 minute running time - the longest and most complete print of this film available. The disc has English audio only, no subtitles. This print of the film uses the musical score by George Fenton (there was an alternate score done by Tangerine Dream - not on this disc).
