Description: Hi,I have up for your consideration four very unique letter openers/bookmarks that are related to each other. As you can see they all look about the same but they are not. Two are souvenirs made of the USS Akron ZRS-4 Duralumin with some differences between them, another has the State Seal of Florida stamped with the City of Daytona and the last one has the State Seal of Illinois with the City of Dansville stamped into it. Each are different in there own way and putting together a set like this is no easy task. These also come with a L.O.A. I sell more than collectables. I sell stories. History- If you are a collector of US Navy Airships relics, then you might already be familiar with two of the letter openers/bookmarks listed here. First of all, many list these as bookmarks and yes, they can be used as them but I find that they are hard to put on a page without risk of tearing one. I tried using one as a letter opener and that made much more sense to me. It easily cuts envelopes open. Maybe they were designed to be both. I am not 100% sure but whatever they were designed for, they sure make a nice addition to your airship/Zeppelin collection.I will describe how each one is a bit different then the others. I originally believed that the only ones that were out in the market were the ones made from Duralumin and stating that they came from the Akron. I was wrong. I sourced the other two examples to see what the differences were. This is what I found out.The first one I will talk about is the one marked Akron and has the "The Akron Equipment Co. Akron, Ohio U.S.A. stamped into the blade. This one is a tad thicker than the other one. It weighs in at .3341 OZ. The medallion, which are sort of rivetted on each of these openers, have the same thickness of the blade. I would assume that whatever company manufactured these, possible The Akron Equipment Co. itself, stamped these out of the same sheet of metal, depending what was removed from the airship and supplied to them. The second example of the Akron opener, weighs in at .1794 OZ. which is almost half the weight of the first one. It is much thinner then the first one and the medallion is the same thickness as the blade. This would be consistent with the different thickness of metal sheets that would have been used in the manufacturing process of the USS Akron. Now lets talk about the third example, the Danville, Illinois State Seal opener. This one is the third heaviest at .5985 OZ.On this one, the medallion and the blade have different thicknesses. I don't think these are made of Duralumin. The blade has a shine to it and the metal is more springy. It feels like stainless steel though I cannot be sure. The medallion feel to be heavier then the other ones. Lastly, the forth example with the City of Daytona, State of Florida Seal on it. This is the heaviest one at .6047 OZ. That is three times the weight of the lightest Akron version. The opener is the most tarnish and has a little bit of corrosion along the edges. The medallion feels heavy but not as heavy as the one from Illinois.Ok, there you have it! Why did I do this comparison? Just because I don't think anyone else has nor did anyone else think that there were a few different examples of each. Also, if you do ever come across any of these types, I will take a guess that the ones from the Duralumin will probably have a few different examples depending on the material provided by The Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation. Also, I think it is safe to say that the ones from the USS Akron were authorized by the Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation. Why do I have all listed for sale? I think its a safe bet that it would take you a few years to find all of these, if any at all. The ones from the USS Akron are drying up. Also, who knows how many other cities had ordered these? You now have an education in these types of letter openers/bookmarks! If you search the internet and can find one (good luck), most go for $89.99-$129 each!!! These are a great price for four of them. Did I mention this item comes with a L.O.A.? It does!!! Shipping- I will ship these anywhere via the USPS for $8.99.
