Contemporary patterned cloth, edges untrimmed. With several illustrations, the wonderful Seal of Solomon frontispiece, the author’s pentagram to title page, the sign of excommunication, and various other tarot illustrations and engravings. This is the first volume (Dogme) of Lévi’s work, which has in recent decades become a key text in understanding not just 19th century occultism but the relationship between magic and religion in a broader sense. The first English translation of the work did not come into 1896; that work is scarce, and so thus the first appearance. A good copy, the cloth rubbed, torn, split at joints with some rubbing, the binding fairly tight, though with one page loose, several others rather haphazardly taped to the gutters. Endpapers may have been excised, though this might well be a simple and honest contemporary binding; there are no external titles, and perhaps for good reason given subject. The text itself largely clean, the usual toning to pages one would expect, and with some small nicks, closed tears and creasing. Nevertheless scarce and important—Lévi’s work continues to be of interest to occultist scholars.
