Description: Boris Pasternak. Doctor Zhivago, A Novel. Translated from the Russian by Max Hayward and Martha Harari. NY: Pantheon, 1958. First American Edition. 5 ¾” x 8 ½”. Pages 558. Dust wrapper. Good vintage condition with slight offsetting to spine, but internally clean. Dust wrapper has wear commensurate with age and use, including chipping along the edges and small tears along folds. Boris Pasternak (1890-1960) was a major twentieth century Russian poet, novelist and translator. Pasternak was awarded the 1958 Noble Prize for Literature, but the Communist Party did not allow him to accept it. This is a nice copy of the important first American edition of this highly praised novel about the Russian Revolution of 1917 which had to be smuggled out of Russia to be published; it was only published in Russia in 1987.
