Description: Niagara - Artist: S. Cook Engraver: J. Godfpey. East and West Lyn Rivers, North Devon "The streams of the East and West Lyn join at Watersmeet, one of the loveliest spots in the neighborhood...moss-covered rocks lie in masses under the oaks; and the ferns by the river-side make a thick jungle. It is, however the great variety—the contrast of the bare, rocky hill and promontory with these wood-clothed valleys—which gives especial character and unusual inter to Lynmouth and to all this portion of the north coast." --North Devon, Picturesque Europe This beautiful print has been rescued from the ravages of time from a deteriorated copy of Picturesque America printed in 1872-4. The print, one of sixty-five in the two volume set, was made from a hand engraved and acid etched steel-plate and printed by D. Appleton & Company of New York, edited by the romantic poet and journalist William Cullen Bryant. Originally published as a semi-monthly magazine the parts were sent to subscribers who would have them bound when the subscription was completed. As status symbols proudly displayed in America’s parlors, the beautiful cloth and leather bound volumes consisting of sixty-five essays along with nine hundred fifty engravings were an undoubted influence on the growth of tourism and early preservation movements for historic parks and cities throughout America. These Picturesque America engravings have been treated to restore them to near their original beauty of some 150 years ago. All have been de-acidified and matted with acid free mats and backing boards. The mat is pure white with a black core at a 45 degree bevel and is joined with a same-sized white backing board. Mat opening is 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches, engraving area is 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Overall size is 11 x 14 inches and is ready for framing to suit your décor.
