Delta Airlines had filed an application to serve this route more than a year earlier when the United States and Japan entered into a Memorandum of Understanding allowing the United States to select three new routes to Japan. This cover was carried on the inaugural Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta, Georgia to Tokyo, Japan (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as DL-F72.
