Loree; Loree's Locomotives; The New Era. Here is the story of a railroad, still vigorous today. which began in 1823 as a canal system to transport Pennsylvania coal to New York State. The line made early railroad fume by importing from England the famous Stourbridge Lion, first steam locomotive in America. This occurred during a great expansion into gravity, an interesting phase which took advantage of the mountainous terrain. A period of expansion and amalgamation was aided by extremely able and ambitious presidents, and eventually D&H advertised itself as "the Bridge Lino to New England and Canada." Mountainous terrain around the coal mines gave the line heavy grades for an Eastern railroad so it was natural that one of its presidents. L. F. Lome, was fascinated with experimental traction power. The many Loree locomotives which were the leaders in progressive design are pictured and described herein. They are enormously interesting to radians. Since a good railroad history is always an economic history of a region. this book will surely please historians, too. Delaware & Hudson is a definitive work. encompassing the mining of the region and detailing the steamboat operations on Lakes George and Champlain. Seldom has such a penetrating and thorough study of a single railroad been done before. It will raise the standards for all future railroad books. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Jim Shaughnessy derived his interest in railroading from an uncle who once worked for the D & H. Jim accompanied him on visits to railroad yards to watch trains. As his interest grow, he took up a hobby of railroad photography. He is a regular contributor to Trains and Hainan magazines and other railroad publications, and is the author of The Rutland Road, published by Howell North Books in 1967. The American Association of State and Local History awarded Shaughnessy a Certificate of Merit for The Rutland Road. He has traveled through most of the 50 states. Canada. Mexico and 17 European countries. Thus his photographic collection has grown enormously. and so has the list of magazine articles he has authored and illustrated. Shaughnessy knows and takes good pictures which give not only mechanical details of the trains, but also give consideration to the location and surroundings of a rail line. Night views are his special favorite and he goes to great lengths to make these views dramatic and memorable. His work has appeared in eight Lucius Beebe books I and he is known to be a generous contributor to other authors' works. The Rutland has always particularly interested him because of its quaint country-type operation and its colorful equipment, for, as he believes. "a train is a rural thing anyway." He is a native of Troy. New York. graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with a degree in Civil Engineering. and is a licensed professional engineer. He was an Associate Professor in Civil Technology at Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, an engineer with the Rensselaer County Highway Department. and is now working with a consulting engineering firm involved in water supplies and waste disposal. He resides in Troy with his wife, the former Carol MacNaughton. and son James Donald. Jim Shaughnessy's insatiable interest in railroad pictures has led to a vast knowledge of railroad operations for he has made it a practice to find out the whys and wherefores of every detail he photographs.
